My journey into project management has been enriched by a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. In addition to earning my Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Telecoms plus pursuing an MBA, I have also dedicated myself to obtaining certifications that have deepened my understanding and proficiency in project management.

What characteristics do you think are needed to be successful in your role?

First, strong leadership skills are crucial for effectively guiding teams, setting clear objectives, and being a good team player since it’s hard to do projects alone. You need a solid team aimed at achieving the same milestones in the required timeframes. Additionally, excellent communication skills, whether oral, written or both enable effective collaboration with stakeholders and facilitate the seamless flow of information within the project team.

Keen attention to detail helps ensure accuracy in planning and execution, while also mitigating risks. Adaptability is also key, as project management often involves navigating unforeseen challenges and changing circumstances with grace and resilience.

A proactive mindset and problem-solving abilities are vital for identifying issues early and implementing timely solutions. Lastly, a commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends and best practices is essential for driving innovation and maintaining a competitive edge.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A typical day as a project manager is a dynamic orchestration of various tasks and interactions, each crucial for ensuring project success. Mornings often begin with a thorough review of emails and messages, setting the stage for the day ahead. Prioritization is key as I prepare for meetings, whether it's discussing project status with team members, aligning with clients on requirements, or strategizing with vendors and suppliers. This early coordination lays the groundwork for effective collaboration throughout the day.

The heart of my day revolves around problem-solving and communication. I dive into planning and organizing project activities, updating schedules, and allocating resources. As the day unfolds, I am constantly assessing progress and addressing any challenges that arise. This requires quick thinking, creative problem-solving, and a proactive approach to keep the project on track. Meanwhile, communication flows seamlessly as I update stakeholders on milestones, decisions, and any adjustments to the plan. Clear, concise communication is essential for keeping everyone aligned and informed.

As the day winds down, I take a moment to reflect and evaluate. I consider what went well, what could have been improved, and any lessons learned. This reflective practice informs future decisions and actions, driving continuous improvement in project execution. Before wrapping up for the day, I outline the top priorities to tackle first thing the next morning, ensuring a focused start and seamless handoff for the team.

Flexibility and adaptability are vital throughout the day, allowing me to pivot and adjust plans as needed. Ultimately, each day as a project manager is a journey of strategic thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, all aimed at delivering successful outcomes for the project and its stakeholders.
